A Day at the Races

The Grand National is days away and it’s top of the list to kick off our spring/summer social calendar. But what can you expect from the big day? From traditions to style tips, this is your need to know for Aintree.

What’s On

The Grand National festival kicks off with the opening ceremony and an exhilarating day of racing. Place your bets and soak up the atmosphere in the stands or watch the race unfold trackside. Day two is the fashion highlight. Ladies’ Day is open to everyone, so if you think your look is in the running, head to the Red Rum Garden and pose for a photo in front of the flower wall. The finalists are announced on the big screens across the festival and the winner is crowned on stage.
Although we think the Style Award is the main event – of course – the big race on the final day is undoubtedly iconic. There will be a champion’s parade and a performance of the national anthem before the horses cross the starting line at 5.15pm.

Ladies’ Day

On Ladies’ Day or ‘Fabulous Friday’, the focus shifts from the racecourse to the grandstands. And, with a brand new car to win, the style stakes are high. Elegance and individuality set the tone and there’s no tried and tested fashion formula; it’s all about how you can put your own twist on a race day look. From impact-making embroidery to statement jewels and stand-out colour palettes, the judges will be looking for high impact outfits.

Dressing to Impress

Unlike other race days, Aintree has no official dress code, so you can afford to take a more directional approach; channelling catwalk-approved silhouettes and bold colour combinations. But don’t overlook the unspoken rule: this is your chance to dress up and show up. Think sophistication with a side order of femininity and a generous helping of glamour.

The Dos and Don’ts

Do try a jumpsuit as a contemporary alternative to a dress.
Don’t go too casual. Smart is the rule of thumb.
Do be bold with your outfit choices. Jump on the opportunity to showcase your style.
Don’t forget the classics. Fascinators, spring pastels and lace have stood the test of time for a reason.
