Children’s Easter Snacks with Tigerlilly Quinn

Sweeten up springtime with  blogger Fritha from Tigerlilly Quinn, as she shows us how to make kid-friendly Easter snacks and treats, from hot cross bunnies to egg-shaped biscuits.

When it comes to favourite activities to do with the kids, baking is definitely up there at the top. Yes, it’s often messy and sure, after they’ve both finished with licking the spoon they usually need a good dip in the bath but it’s great fun. I’ve found that some of my favourite parenting memories and chats with my kids have been had while measuring out flour and butter. And with the Easter just around the corner, we have been busy baking up some holiday-themed treats!

Egg-Shaped Biscuits

First up: egg-shaped biscuits. We followed a simple biscuit-making recipe using 100g of flour, 50g of caster sugar and 175g of plain flour. You can also add a couple of drops of vanilla extract for a bit of extra flavour.  Once you’ve popped all on the ingredients in a bowl and mixed together, sprinkle a little flour onto your counter and roll out the dough. You don’t need a special cutter to make the biscuits – I used a small cup to make a circle and simply stretched it out into more of an oval shape.

Make the icing sugar using 125g of icing sugar, two teaspoons of milk and two teaspoons of golden syrup (plus food colouring of your choice). Alternatively, you can get your icing pre-bought (shhh… I won’t tell!). Once the biscuits are cool, spread your icing onto them and add your sprinkles! This is the part my five year old loves the most – apart from eating them of course!

Hot Cross Bunnies

Next, we made some bunny-shaped hot cross buns! These are so simple to make but still manage to leave a smile on both my little ones’ faces. It also allows me to sneak in a vegetable for them to eat, so it’s a win-win for me.

To make these simple hot cross bunnies, all you need to do is peel your carrots and cut in half. Once you’ve done that, toast your buns and cut into a circle using a cup or circle shaped biscuit cutter. Next up, you’ll need to push the two carrot sticks into the top of your buns to make ears. If you want to, you can also slice up three small bits of carrots off the top of your carrot to make eyes and a nose. So simple but it’s a real winner with my kiddos.
