If you’ve made the decision to come to Melbourne, my hometown, you’re probably a very sassy traveller. Being one of the most liveable cities in the world, Melbourne welcomes tourists from all parts of the globe searching the best in fine dining, art and sporting events.
The state of Victoria is known for having some of the best restaurants in the world (Brae, Dinner by Heston, Attica) and if you’re after a pampering escape my favourite spot is Daylesford, a small town only an hour’s drive from Melbourne city.
Nestled in the region of Hepburn Springs, Daylesford has an abundance of spas, fine dining and art galleries. It’s a destination that works equally well for a girls weekend or a romantic getaway. I visit the area a few times a year and here are a few of my favourite haunts.
The Lake House: This restaurant is known Australia-wide for it’s fine dining, winning countless awards. The chef, Alla, is committed to sourcing produce locally and ethically. The food, whilst intricate, is wholesome and satisfying. Think pine-needle smoked quail or peanut parfait. The pretty dining room has killer views, with the restaurant taking prime position on the Lake Daylesford. $$$

The Farmers Arms: This pub is somewhat of an institution and has a no-booking policy. The menu varies across cuisines but masters each dish. The prices here are fairly reasonable and there’s a sold wine list. $$

Larder: Melbourne’s coffee is popping up all over the world, from corner shops in Amsterdam to dedicated flat-white cafes in New York. In Daylesford, there’s no shortage of good coffee but I like Larder. The space is well designed, there’s a concise brunch menu and plenty of home made treats. $

Daisy Dining: If you want a night in and don’t feel like cooking, Rachel Daisy can cater for small groups up to 18. She has an extensive menu on her site so there’s something for most taste buds. $$

Saint Etienne: This charming federation home has been completely renovated with all the mod-cons. It has three bedrooms and is family-friendly with a play corner for the kids.

Lake House: There are a range of newly renovated suites at the Lake House. Some come with lake views and give direct access to the nearby walking tracks and Lake House restaurant.

White House: This property is part of Melbourne Designer Lynda Garderner’s portfolio. There’s a separate back studio, which is perfect for a pair of lovers and it’s only a short walk from the town centre.

Mineral Bath: It’s the reason why people flock to the region. Nutrient-rich natural mineral water is in abundance in this area and there are plenty of bath houses and spas that offer treatments using it.

Lavender farms: If you’re after a stunning Instagram shot then look no further than the purple fields dotted throughout Hepburn Springs.

Produce: There are a bunch of specialist produce makers in the area. For incredible cured meats check out Istra Smallgoods for chorizo, salumi’s and thick-cut bacon.
