What to wear to a christening

Finding the perfect outfit for any event can sometimes feel like navigating a fashion maze, so we’ve pulled together our knowledge and favourite picks to save you some time and energy. Starting with: Christenings.

Christening dress codes may vary depending on the parents’ preferences. But traditionally, as christenings are a special occasion, they call for semi-formal attire, similar to a wedding. To get a feel, check out the venue and don’t be afraid to ask the parents if there’s a dress code they want you to stick to. Need some ideas? Here’s some style inspiration.

Beautiful dresses

A classic midi dress is the perfect choice for a christening. If the dress code is formal, opt for our purple embroidered dress, which is super special. Or for something semi-formal, go for a pop of colour with a bold floral shirt dress. If floral prints aren’t your thing, geometrics also make a statement.

Smart blouses

If you’re worried a dress is too fancy, consider pairing a chic blouse with a skirt or tailored trousers instead. Experiment with different textures or prints to add depth to your outfit. This ivory applique blouse looks great with a pair of black smart trousers and heels. If you’re after something formal-yet-fun, opt for our orange flutter sleeve top with a midi skirt and bold gold jewellery. Or how about our red embellished printed jersey top with your favourite trouser? You’ll wear these again and again.

Hair accessories

Adding a hairband to your christening outfit is a fun and easy way to elevate your look. Choose one that complements your outfit, whether it’s a plaited band, a net fascinator or and an embellished piece to catch the light. There are so many accessories you can use to add to make your christening outfits fun.

The question on everyone’s lips… Can you wear white to a christening?

The short answer is yes. While it’s generally acceptable to wear white to a christening, no one wants to upstage the star of the day — the baby or parents! If you choose to wear white, choose an outfit that incorporates other colours or prints. Floral patterns, pastel shades, or a touch of embellishment can help soften the starkness of white. It’s all about striking the right balance.

Remember, it’s always a good idea to respect the dress code of the family hosting the christening. If you’re unsure about the level of formality, it’s better to lean towards slightly more dressed-up options.
